Testosterone Injection Instructions
Follow these steps to safely and effectively administer your testosterone treatment at home–whether it's weekly or biweekly.
Tips
Before You Inject Testosterone – Important Details
-
Stick to your schedule: Inject at the same time on your set day each week (or biweekly) to maintain stable hormone levels and reduce mood or energy swings.
-
Let the vial warm up: Leave the vial at room temperature for 15–30 minutes before use – injecting cold oil can be uncomfortable.
-
Choose the right site: Rotate between thighs, buttocks, or abdomen (for subcutaneous injections) to avoid tissue buildup or soreness.
-
Inject slowly: Take your time – injecting the oil-based solution too quickly can cause discomfort or post-injection pain.
-
Relax the muscle: Keep the injection site relaxed to minimize pain. Tensing up can make the injection feel sharper.
-
Use a mirror if needed: Especially for gluteal injections, a mirror can help with placement and technique.
Instructions
Instructions for self-administering testosterone injections weekly or bi-weekly
The process is simple and designed for steady hormone release. You may not feel much during the injection, but rest assured, it’s working. Once the dose is in, it can’t be reversed or reused. Always follow your treatment plan and prescribed dosage.
- Let the vial come to room temperature if needed.
- Wash your hands and gather your supplies: syringe, drawing needle, injection needle (22–23 gauge), alcohol swabs, sharps bin.
- Clean the vial top with an alcohol swab.
- Draw up the prescribed dose with the drawing needle.
- Remove any air bubbles (see below) and switch to a clean injection needle.
- Clean your injection site (thigh, buttock, or abdomen).
- Insert the needle at a 90° angle for intramuscular injection, or 45° angle for subcutaneous.
- Inject the medication slowly and steadily.
- Withdraw the needle and apply light pressure.
- Dispose of the syringe and needle in a sharps container.
- Rotate injection sites each time.
What do I do if I see air bubbles in my syringe?
Before injecting, it’s important to remove any air bubbles from the syringe to ensure accurate dosing and smooth administration. After drawing up your dose, hold the syringe upright, gently tap it to bring air bubbles to the top, and slowly push the plunger until they’re expelled. A small drop of oil at the tip is normal. Always refer to the Patient Information Leaflet provided with your medication for full instructions and safety guidance.
